Bharti Airtel to sell 950 towers in Congo to Helios Tower Africa

Bharti Airtel has signed a definitive agreement with Helios Tower Africa (HTA) to sell and leaseback around 950 telecom towers in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The financial details of the deal, however, have not been disclosed.

The move is part of Airtel’s strategy to significantly reduce its capital expenditure on passive infrastructure in Africa and focus on its core business. Meanwhile, the transaction will help HTA expand its tower footprint to around 6,500 towers in Africa.

Airtel has around 14,000 towers in Africa, of which it has sold 8,300 for around $1.7 billion. In March 2016, the operator had entered into an agreement with the American Tower Corporation (ATC) to sell 1,350 towers in Tanzania.
