Smartphone users in India to increase to 829 million in 2020, says Cisco

According to Cisco’s visual networking index (VNI) the smartphone users in India are expected to increase from 404.1 million in 2017 to 829 million in 2022.

The report also predicted that the number of users as a percentage to India’s population will increase by 27 per cent to reach about 60 per cent of the Indian population by 2022. Moreover, smart devices will boost India’s per capita traffic consumption from 2.4 GB in 2017 to 14 GB in 2022.

In addition, the report also stated that the number connected devices are expected to go increase from 1.6 billion in 2017 to 2.2 billion by 2022, out of which smartphones are likely to account for 38 per cent, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 15.5 per cent. Further the average smartphone usage is expected to increase by 3.5 GB to 17.5 GB by 2022.

Moreover, India's IP traffic grew 53% in 2017 and reached 3.3 exabytes per month in 2017, up from 2.1 exabytes per month in 2016.

In India, IP traffic reached 2.4 gigabytes per capita in 2017, up from 1.6 gigabytes per capita in 2016. Per capita consumption is expected to reach to 13.9 GB by 2022.

The average fixed broadband speed in India grew by 44 per cent from 6.6 Mbps in 2016 to 9.5 Mbps in 2017. Additionally, the internet video traffic in the country would reach 13.5 exabytes per month by 2022.

Meanwhile, the IPv6-capable fixed and mobile devices would increase from 351.3 million in 2017 to 1.2 billion in 2022, at a CAGR of 28 per cent.

Apart from this, the total public Wi-Fi hotspots including homespots are expected to grow from 5.15 million in 2017 to 6.0 million by 2022.
