DoT planning to review telecom connectivity initiatives in the NER

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is planning to review the telecom connectivity issues in the North-eastern region (NER).


According to Manoj Sinha, Minister of State (Independent Charge), Communications no mobile tower had been installed on the India-China border.

Amongst the initiatives to be reviewed is the Comprehensive Telecom Development Plan for the NER, which was approved in September 2014. The plan aimed to deploy 6,673 mobile towers for 8,621 identified uncovered villages.

To this end, in April 2017, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) selected partners to roll out the initiative for deploying 2,817 mobile towers in Arunachal Pradesh and Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts of Assam. The operator also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in January 2018 for the same. However, BSNL has not started the deployment work.

Meanwhile, Bharti Airtel has deployed nearly 40 towers in the region. Moreover, the operator had also won a single bid contract government funded contract worth Rs 16.6 billion to put up 2,005 mobile towers, upon the Telecom Commission’s approval in September 2017.
