A consortium led by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) will be executing the Kerela Fibre Optic Network (K-FON) project worth Rs 10.28 billion to build a state wide infrastructure which aims to provide connectivity to all its government and educational institutions apart from offering internet services to citizens at cheaper rates. The BEL consortium, which also comprises RailTel Corporation and SRIT India Private Limited, was recently selected for the execution of the project, which is a joint venture (50:50) between the Kerala State IT Infrastructure Limited (KSITIL) and the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB).

During the bidding process, three consortiums led by BEL, Telecom Consultants India Limited and A2Z had bid for the K-FON project. According to Kerala State IT Infrastructure Limited (KSITIL), while all the three consortiums were found to be technically qualified, the BEL consortium was selected as it quoted the lowest amount of Rs 13 billion, which includes capital and operational expenditure for seven years.

Out of the project’s total outlay of Rs 10.28 billion, the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board will contribute Rs 8.23 billion while the KSEB will be contributing the remaining amount.
