CERC permits Power Grid to offer towers for BTS installation

The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) has permitted the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL), a state-owned transmission utility to offer towers to telecom companies for installation of base transceiver stations (BTS) to improve mobile connectivity.

The move comes after PGCIL sought CERC's permission to use its existing electricity transmission infrastructure for telecommunication functions.

The initiative would help in addressing the issue of deficient telecom coverage in the country, especially remote areas, while generating revenues for Power Grid. Besides, the power distribution utilities will get a share of income, which would eventually reduce tariff burden imposed on consumers.

In terms of revenue sharing, CERC has initially approved a revenue sharing arrangement in the ratio of 50:50 of the net revenue, after deduction of all direct and indirect costs. However, the same shall be reviewed on completion of one year.

Power Grid has around 150,000 high voltage transmission towers spread across the country and passing through remote rural areas that are suitable for the plan.
