Telecom sector revenues increase in QE June 2019; first rise after decline in nine quarters

As per the performance indicator report released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the revenue for the telecom sector has witnessed an increase during the quarter ended (QE) June 2019, after declining for nine quarters. Both the gross revenue (GR) and adjusted gross revenue (AGR) for the sector witnessed an increase during the quarter.

The data revealed that the telecom industry recorded a rise of 8.8 per cent in AGR on a quarter-on-quarter basis and stood at Rs 391.24 billion during the QE June 2019. This is the sharpest on-quarter growth in the industry since Reliance Jio Infocomm’s entry in 2016.

Further, the industry’s GR increased by 5.34 per cent in QE June 2019 in comparison to the QE March 2019.

The year-on-year (Y-O-Y) growth in GR and AGR in QE June 2019 was 5.37 per cent and 7.03 per cent respectively. Among operators, Reliance Jio’s AGR rose 9.77 per cent on quarter to Rs 108 billion in the April-June period, followed by Airtel with 26.15 per cent jump to Rs 74.68 billion. Vodafone Idea reported a 5.78 per cent fall in the same quarter to Rs 67.21 billion.
